Vizio remote not working? Here's how to fix it

⚡Fast fix

  • Check the batteries. Replace them with fresh ones and make sure they're inserted correctly.
  • Restart your Vizio TV. Unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and try the remote.
  • Clear the path. Make sure nothing is blocking the TV's remote sensor, and try using the remote from closer up.
  • Still not responding? Try the Vizio mobile app as a temporary remote to help narrow down whether the problem is with the TV or remote.

You’re hitting buttons repeatedly, trying to change the channel or adjust the volume on your Vizio® TV, but nothing’s happening. As tempting as it is, pressing the buttons harder won’t fix an unresponsive remote. You need a real fix, and Asurion can help.

We troubleshoot everything from TVs that won't turn on to remotes that suddenly stop working. Before you spend money on a replacement, there are a few things worth checking. Here's how to figure out what's going on and get your Vizio remote working again.

Check your Vizio remote's batteries and sensor

The top reason a Vizio remote is not responding to the TV is simply that the batteries are dead. If you haven’t already, open up the battery compartment of your remote and take the old batteries out. Find new batteries that fit and install them with the positive and negative ends lined up correctly.

Next, look for obstructions around the TV's receiver. Make sure there’s nothing in the way between your remote and the receiver, such as a cabinet door, furniture, or clutter. Try cleaning off the remote sensor, since dirt or dust there can lead to a Vizio remote sensor not working.

How to troubleshoot a Vizio remote that isn't responding

If your Vizio remote is not responding to your TV, try testing your remote’s infrared signal and resetting it.

To test your remote's infrared signal, open the camera app on your smartphone. Position the front tip of the remote directly at the camera lens, within two inches. Press and hold any button on the remote and watch your phone screen. If the remote is working, you will see a flashing light on your screen when you press the remote button.

You need a compatible IR remote for this test to work, and results depend on the camera and remote type, so a negative test does not always prove the remote is defective.

Reset your Vizio remote next. Remove the batteries from the remote and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to drain any residual power. Put new batteries back in.

If the Vizio remote is still not responding, try restarting your TV.

  1. Press the Menu or Gear button.
  2. Go to System or Admin & Privacy.
  3. Select Soft Power Cycle or Restart TV.

After a reset, you may need to connect your Vizio TV to Wi-Fi again.

What to do if your Vizio remote still won't work

Try an alternate remote next, such as another Vizio remote, a smartphone TV app, or a universal remote. If the TV is still not recognizing the commands, the issue could be with the TV receiver. If the TV responds, the original remote is probably defective. Consider ordering a replacement remote in that case.

FAQ

How do I reset my Vizio remote?

Reset your Vizio remote by removing the batteries. Then, press and hold the Power button for five seconds to drain any residual power. Press all the buttons on the remote at least once to clear any stuck buttons. Then, put in a new set of batteries. If you have a voice remote, re-pair it by selecting Pair New Remote and holding the Microphone and Mute buttons down together for at least five seconds until the red light blinks.

Why is my Vizio remote sensor not working?

Your Vizio remote sensor may not work if the sensor lens is dirty, the remote batteries are dead, external signals interfere, or the internal hardware has failed. Try cleaning the sensor window and replacing the remote batteries to see if that helps.

Can I use a universal remote with a Vizio TV?

Yes, you can use a universal remote with a Vizio TV. When you set up your universal remote, you will either enter one of the Vizio brand codes listed in your remote’s manual or run an automatic code search by holding the Setup button, pressing TV, and repeatedly tapping the Power button until the TV turns off. Then, press Stop or Save to lock in the connection.
