⚡ Fast fix

  • Wrong power source? A flashing orange light usually means insufficient power.
  • Use the right adapter: Plug into a 20W power brick—not a low-watt phone charger.
  • Check connections: Loose or damaged cables can trigger the warning.
  • Restart it: Unplug, wait 10–15 seconds, and plug it back in.

HomePods® display different colors to indicate their status. You’re probably used to seeing a static white light, for example, which means your HomePod is playing audio. But what about when the HomePod is flashing orange?

It can be frustrating to see a flashing orange light on your HomePod and not know what it means. While it looks like a major error, try not to worry. Usually, it just points to a simple power issue.

Luckily, the experts at Asurion learn tech inside and out—from tablets and smartphones to smart speakers like HomePod. We help customers like you better understand and make the most of your devices. Discover what it means if your HomePod is flashing orange so you can take the right next steps.

Check your power adapter and cable

Usually, a flashing orange light on the HomePod means there’s a power-related issue. Check the power adapter and cable to make sure everything is firmly plugged in.

The problem may be that the power adapter does not offer sufficient wattage. The HomePod mini requires a USB-C power adapter of at least 20W.

HomePod connected to a Mac or PC

The other main possibility when your HomePod is blinking orange light is that you have it plugged into a computer. Seeing an orange light is normal when you plug the HomePod into a computer for updates or restores.

As soon as you disconnect the HomePod from your Mac® or PC, the orange blinking light should go away. If it continues, you may need to restart your HomePod.

Troubleshooting a failed software update

Like many other smart devices, HomePods periodically need software updates. The easiest way to make sure your HomePod software stays up to date is to turn on automatic updates in the Home app on your iOS®, iPadOS®, or macOS® device.

If you don’t use automatic updates, you can go into the Home app to check for updates periodically and install them manually. While your HomePod is updating, you’ll see a spinning white light on the speaker.

HomePod software updates sometimes fail. Usually, it’s not a big deal. Just try restarting your HomePod and the Home app, then trying the update again. If you see an orange blinking light during this process, it means the power source is not suitable. Use a 20W power adapter.

How to restart your HomePod

When you’re having trouble with your HomePod, like an orange blinking light that won’t go away, restarting the speaker is a good idea. A restart may also help if your HomePod is not responding or you’re having other common smart home device issues. Follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the HomePod from the wall.
  2. Wait at least 10–15 seconds.
  3. Plug your HomePod back in.

You should see a white spinning light to indicate that the speaker is turning on.

How to reset your HomePod to factory settings

As a last resort, you can reset your HomePod to factory settings. You’ll have to set it up from scratch afterward, but this can help resolve more persistent issues. Reset an Apple HomePod in the app with these steps:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Select HomePod > Settings.
  3. Choose Reset HomePod > Remove Accessory.
  4. Wait for a white spinning light to appear.

You can also reset the HomePod manually.

  1. Restart the HomePod.
  2. Wait 10 more seconds, then hold your finger down on the top of the HomePod.
  3. You should see a red spinning light. Keep holding down your finger.
  4. Wait for three beeps after Siri® says your HomePod is about to reset to lift your finger.

Keep in mind that you may lose data associated with your HomePod when you complete a reset.
