Common causes of Kindle battery drain

Are you wondering, why is my Kindle battery draining so fast? Here are a few possible reasons:

  • Your Kindle needs a software update.
  • Your e-reader screen is too bright.
  • An app or background app refresh is draining your Kindle battery.
  • You’re staying connected to Wi-Fi for too long.

How to extend your Kindle battery life

If your Kindle battery isn’t lasting as long as it used to, a few small setting changes can make a noticeable difference. These are the easiest ways to stretch battery life without changing how you read.

1. Restart your Kindle

Sometimes it’s not the battery—it’s a background process that didn’t close properly.

Press and hold the Power button for about 40 seconds until the screen goes blank and the device restarts. This clears out temporary glitches that can quietly drain power.

2. Turn on Power Saver

Power Saver puts your Kindle into a deeper sleep when you’re not using it. It may take a second longer to wake up, but it helps preserve battery throughout the day.

Go to Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Power Saver, then toggle it on.

3. Lower your brightness

The front light is one of the biggest battery drains—especially if it’s set higher than you need.

Swipe down from the top of the screen and use the brightness slider to lower it to a comfortable level. In a well-lit room, you may not need much light at all.

If your Kindle has auto-brightness, turning it off can help you stay in control and avoid unnecessary battery use.

4. Turn on Airplane Mode

Even when you’re not downloading anything, your Kindle is checking for Wi-Fi in the background.

Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the airplane icon to turn on Airplane Mode. This pauses wireless activity and helps your battery last longer.

5. Leave Page Refresh off

Page Refresh forces your Kindle to fully redraw the screen every page—which uses more power.

Go to Settings > Reading Options (or Home & Library, depending on your model) and make sure Page Refresh is turned off.

6. Reduce Warm Light (if available)

If your Kindle has a warmth setting, using both warm and cool lighting at the same time can use more power.

During the day, lower the warmth slider to reduce unnecessary battery drain.

7. Put your Kindle to sleep when you’re done

It’s easy to forget, but leaving your Kindle screen active will slowly drain the battery.

Press the power button once to put it to sleep when you’re done reading—or just close the cover if you’re using a magnetic case.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

How long should a Kindle battery last?

Most Kindles are designed to last weeks on a single charge, depending on how often you read and what settings you’re using.

Does Wi-Fi drain Kindle battery?

Yes. Even when you’re not downloading books, your Kindle may still be checking for updates or syncing. Turning on Airplane Mode can help extend battery life.

Does brightness affect battery life?

It does. Higher brightness levels use more power, especially over long reading sessions. Lowering it—even slightly—can make a difference.

Is it bad to leave my Kindle charging overnight?

In most cases, no. Kindles are designed to stop charging once the battery is full. Still, unplugging it when it’s done charging can help preserve long-term battery health.
